Equivocal agency

The definition of biological agency is far from uniform across and within disciplines and varies according to its context and application, whether in discussions on development, organisation, evolution, or in reference to genes, cells, organisms, or even natural selection. Additionally, it is shared by researchers from a broad spectrum of disciplines and serves varied purposes. In some cases, the concept is merely metaphorical, while in others it plays an operational role, being incorporated into biological theories or even acquiring ontological significance.
Such a multiplicity of definitions seems to indicate the existence of multiple concepts of agency linked only by their shared terminology.
The aim of this "offshoot project" is to explore whether there is a way to articulate and reconcile the various meanings of this biological agency.
